Paradise Isle Holidays has been releasing content as part of their wellness promotion over the past couple of weeks, in preparation for the 4th World Wellness Weekend on 19/20 September 2020. There may be a lot of people wondering what the link is between wellness and travel. There are a variety of destinations that tailor their programmes towards particular wellness dimensions. Our wellness series provided some inspiration for holiday destinations based on particular wellness dimensions as a starting point.

What is the difference between wellness and well-being?

Wellness focuses on the physical state, which is often influenced by many other factors (also referred to as dimensions); emotionality, spirituality as well as the mental state.

Wellbeing is more of a holistic term, referring to the overall experience of life influencing our body, mind and health.

The Importance of Wellness and Wellbeing

Even if you are fit and healthy, you might not have the right mental state, and therefore the balance is off. This means that whilst your body might be in top shape, your mind is not. In order to feel overall satisfaction with life, there are changes that you can introduce into your life, to live a happy life and feel like your experience is worthwhile.
Carmen Perez, founder of “Wellbeing Messenger” states that there are many things that can be done to achieve a healthy wellness and wellbeing balance:

  1. Working out
  2. Controlling the work/life balance and stress
  3. Healthy diet
  4. Me time (spend time by yourself, on yourself!)
  5. We time (socialise!)
  6. Home environment
  7. Work environment
  8. Physical body and appearance
  9. Staying positive and being happy

These factors are from different facets of your life, which you should try to balance to achieve an overall sense of control of your life, whilst doing the things that need to be done.

Have you ever heard of the term “R&R”? This refers to ‘rest and recuperation’ and means that you should relax and not work all the time. This is important because if you are constantly working, your brain never gets the chance to enjoy the calm; the time when you actually come back down from the highs and stresses that work brings on. Sometimes it can get to a point where you haven’t stopped to even think about yourself, constantly running to check the next box, to complete the next task, and get jobs done.

This is why many of us have the weekend to relax and spend time on hobbies or working on things that make us happy. Often people take ‘wellness retreats’ but this doesn’t have to be far away…you can do this from home. Just make sure that you keep work at bay; no checking emails, no swiping a cheeky look at your schedule for next week or even thinking about work. Reserve some time to disconnect from your busy schedule and take stock of what you have. Reserve part of your weekend to both relax and energise yourself once more, so that your mind and body are both in a state where they can cope with daily stresses whilst you work.
