These cabins include 1130sq-ft, climate-controlled, living spaces as well cabin exteriors that feature design cues from the region’s vernacular architecture. Basses

The Basses restaurant gets its name from the nearby reef and lighthouse, and its nautical themed interior design creates the perfect ambience for its urbane fine dining fare.

Bush Walk

Chena Huts is located in Yala’s wildlife-rich buffer zone. Wildlife knows no boundaries so we still see a great variety of wildlife in and around the resort including elephants, leopards, buffalo, deer and a rich variety of bird life. Our surroundings are also incredibly picturesque – the shady, scrubby bush that curls around most of the property gives way to an enchanting stretch of coastline yet also borders a lake. Wildlife is drawn to this waterhole throughout the year, and on these walks, we will look out for footprints and signs that may signal visits from elephants, wild boars or rusty-spotted cats. Walks are customized though generally take place at dawn or in the cooler hours of late afternoon.

Stargazing

One of the highlights of a stay in the wilderness is the crisp clarity of the night sky where stars illuminate the skies above our resort. On clear nights, we will invite you to a star-gazing session. As you sit back and gaze up into the swirling Milky Way, you might see shooting stars, identify known constellations (spanning the northern and southern hemispheres) or be lucky enough to experience an eclipse or a meteor shower. Peer through our powerful telescope for a clearer view of the moon or one of our neighbouring planets, many of which can be observed clearly at various intervals throughout the year.

Beach Walk

Sri Lanka’s 1,340-kilometre coastline fosters a wide variety of spectacular beaches. Yet, Yala’s coastline feels like it’s in its own world. Wild, untamed and unpredictable, the beach, dunes and rocky outcrops that form our ocean boundary make it an incredible place to explore. All five of Sri Lanka’s marine turtles wash up here to lay their eggs in the sand and we quite commonly see solitary elephants striding along the rust-red coastline (and into the resort). Our leisurely beach walks take place at dawn or in the late afternoon, and all walks are guided by naturalists through these dramatic coastal surroundings.

Sri Lankan Cooking Class

Hosted by our Head Chef, our cookery classes will show you how to create authentic local recipes and also reveal the intricacies of Sri Lankan cooking. The heart of any Sri Lankan home is its kitchen so you’ll also learn about the culture surrounding Sri Lankan cuisine. In these private cookery classes, our chef will show you how to prepare rice and curry using freshly sourced local produce. You’ll have a go cooking with the hotel chefs using traditional clay pots. At the end of this experience, you’ll come away with genuine Sri Lankan recipes for sharing with friends and family on your return home.
