Did you know…?

Maldives is an archipelago of 1,192 coral islands grouped into 26 natural coral atolls in the Indian Ocean. They lie south west of India and west of Sri Lanka. None of the coral islands measure more than 1.8 metres above sea level.

Only 192 islands are inhabited by the 300,000 inhabitants and more than 100 have been developed for the tourist market; the rest of the islands remain virgin islands.

Sea life

One of the most remarkable aspects of Maldives is the amazing diversity of sea life found in the archipelago. There is a wide range of corals and over 2,000 species of fish, ranging from colourful reef fish to reef sharks, moray eels and a wide variety of rays: the manta ray, stingray and eagle ray. The Maldivian waters are also home to the whale shark.

Before you travel

What To Wear

Most resorts have a relaxed dress policy but modesty is expected – so nudity of any sort is forbidden.

It can be as hot at night as it is in the daytime at most resorts, so take lightweight, breathable clothes; silk, linen and cotton are much better than any synthetic fabrics.

As expected, the temperature gets very hot during the daytime. Because of this, it is essential to take a good quality sun cream, sun hat and sunglasses. To avoid any unwanted insect bites, mosquito/insect repellent is recommended.

Most resorts have a ‘shoe free’ policy, however flip flops are sometimes permitted.

Emergency Numbers
